Event Overview
Aero Engagement Night offers SAE Aero Design East teams a unique opportunity to participate in a dedicated evening focused on learning and workforce development. We are working with the venue for the specific date, but we wanted to get attendance numbers for both dates we can have at the venue. The event will take place either:
After site close on Friday March 6th
After site close on Saturday March 7th
After awards on Sunday March 8th
All student teams are invited to attend at no extra charge. To assist with planning for seating and meals, organizers request that teams provide a head count in advance.
Event Schedule and Activities
Welcome and opening remarks to introduce the evening and set expectations.
Presentation: Requirements Derivation and Design Thinking
A High-level look at how complex engineering challenges are approached and translated into practical design solutions. This session highlights the mindset and methods used across the aerospace industry to move from concept to execution in large-scale, real-world applications from a SAE Aero Design Contest Director.
Presentation: RC Aircraft Flight Simulation for Design Validation and Performance Prediction
MATLAB & Simulink-based 6-DOF flight dynamics simulation framework, specifically developed for SAE Aero Design RC aircraft. This session will provide a technical deep dive on how teams can model their aircraft design and estimate flight performance under varying environmental conditions (density altitude, wind, turbulence, gusts).
The simulation framework will enable teams to test design iterations virtually, identifying various design issues before prototyping and validating compliance with SAE constraints. This session will also demonstrate a step-by-step guide to integrating the framework with existing aircraft design workflows, reducing costly build-test-fail cycles, and competing with a validated, data-backed design.
Program Development Focus Group: This collaborative session invites team input and encourages discussion on the future direction of the SAE Aero Design program.
Catered dinner will be provided for all attendees.
